The 2021 FBLA National Leadership Conference, originally scheduled for Anaheim, California, was moved to a virtual setting due to the pandemic. Fifteen Boyd County FBLA members qualified for the conference, held on June 29-July 2. With the virtual format, members presented their projects live to the judges via Zoom. Objective tests were conducted online by those competitors.
Boyd County members competed in these virtual events: Lauryn Hoffman and Amelia Hoffman - Community Service Project; Kiryn Kayl, Paige Drueke and Amelia Hakl - Local Chapter Annual Business Report; Amelia Hakl, Liz Kersch and McKenzie Snyder - Introduction to Business Presentation; Brynn Almgren - Introduction to Public Speaking; Jenny Goesch - Spreadsheet Applications; Joshua Kersch - Economics; Trevor Goesch - Introduction to Information Technology; Elizabeth Bernt - Middle Level Digital Citizenship; Brooklyn Eckert - Middle Level Business Etiquette.
To kick off the conference Tuesday morning, Amelia Hoffman and Amelia Hakl represented the Boyd County chapter by serving as voting delegates at the Mountain Plains Regional meeting. At the Mountain Plains session, Elizabeth Bernt was announced as a Young Leader award recipient. This award is presented to the top Middle Level members in the country. The opening session and national officer campaign rally were held Tuesday evening.
Throughout the day on Wednesday, members enjoyed the opportunity to network with other FBLA members from across the country. They participated in live workshops and discussion boards, gaining ideas to implement in our own chapter. On Thursday morning, members attended the Nebraska delegation meeting, where Nebraska cast its votes for the national officer candidates running for president, secretary and treasurer.
The first Awards of Excellence program was held Thursday evening, where the top ten placers in each objective test event were recognized. Brooklyn Eckert received 9th place in Middle Level Business Etiquette. This is the 3rd year in a row that the Boyd County chapter has had a Top 10 winner. Also at this session, members were recognized for their achievements in the FBLA programs. Kiryn Kayl completed the challenging fourth and final level of the Business Achievement Awards. Kaci Mashino was one of two Nebraska FBLA members to be recognized for outstanding achievement in community service (500+ hours). Middle Level members Elizabeth Bernt, Addison Birmeier and Brooklyn Eckert were named LEAD program Gold level members. Only 20 Middle Level members in the entire nation received this honor.
To conclude the 2021 National Leadership Conference, a second awards session was held on Friday afternoon, where top competitors in the presentation events were named. Lauryn and Amelia Hoffman’s Community Service Project, titled “Hunger’s Heroes,” was announced as a Top 14 finalist in that event. Prior to the conference, the National qualifiers enjoyed an overnight trip to Sioux City to celebrate their accomplishments.
