Boyd County Cross Country Team Competes in Neligh and Crofton

September 26, 2021

On September 13, the Boyd County Cross Country Team headed to Neligh.  In the varsity girls division junior Natasha Zeisler earned the 9th place medal in a 22:31 time.  Sophomore Zoe Kaczor placed 23rd with a 30:54 time.

The varsity boys were next to compete.  Sophomore Nathan Koenig led his team into the chute finishing 24th with a 20:16 time.  Freshman Grant McGill placed 32rd in 21:18, and fellow freshman Evan Hammon placed 34th with 21:44 on the clock.  Junior Kaleb Kaczor finished out the Spartan runners placing 46th in 27:57.  The boys earned a 9th place team finish.

In the junior high girls race Kaci Koenig, 7th grade, was the lone Spartan runner.  She placed 14th on the 2,200 meter course in 10:39.  The junior high boys saw 8th graders Ethan Zeisler finish 3rd in 8:38, Brook Strom in 7th place with a 9:18 time, and Alex Lechtenberg in 21st with a 12:24 time.

Monday, September 20 brought rain to the east of us causing a cancellation to the previously scheduled BonHomme Meet.  Not wanting to pass up an opportunity to compete, coaches and Boyd County’s AD, Angela Witt, hopped into action, finding Crofton’s invitation for September 23rd.

Boyd County Cross Country has not competed at the Crofton meet for several years now, so the change in venue was exciting.  Crofton’s meet is also a bit larger with several C class schools in attendance.  Nonetheless, big schools do not always mean faster times, and it is really all about getting out to compete. The Spartan runners did just that, compete.

In the girls varsity race N. Zeisler clocked a 25:05 time on the hilly course earning the 25th place.  Z. Kaczor ran and competed well finishing in 46th with a 33:23 time.

N. Koenig ran up the hill and into the chute with a 21:51 time in 46th place in the varsity boys division.  McGill came in next for the Spartans in 59th with a 23:34 time.  Hammon placed 68th in 24:23 and K. Kaczor came through in 30:37 earning the 74th spot.  The Spartan boys placed 11th overall as a team.

The junior high runners took to heart to get out and compete.  Over the course of the 2000 meter race, all runners drove up hills well, used the downhills to their advantage, and passed their fellow competitors. The junior high girls race saw 55 runners line up at the start.  8th grader ReNae Kluckman finished a strong 15th place in 9:02.  K. Koenig came in 24th with a 9:36 time, and fellow 7th grader Addi Janousek placed 30th in 9:59.

The junior high boys race started with 61 runners.  Will Nelson and E. Zeilser, 8th graders, ran smart races that earned them ribbon placings.  Nelson finished 2nd in 7 minutes flat.  Zeisler grabbed 10th with a 7:42.  Teammates Strom and Lechtenberg also ran well and helped the team finish 4th overall.  Strom finished in 26th with 8:32 and Lechtenberg ran 10:36 placing him 52nd.

Boyd County runners will lace up their shoes on Atkinson’s golf course the next two weeks.  Thursday, September 29th is West Holt’s Invite and then on Friday, October 8 we return for the Niobrara Valley Conference meet.  Season is winding down, but Spartan runners are gearing up for more personal bests and great competitive opportunities.
