BC Winter Olympics Wraps Up
The final competition and the medal ceremony closed the Olympics this week at East Campus. The much anticipated bobsled racing was enjoyed by four athletes from each country. In pairs of two, athletes completed the oblong course, with the rider wearing mittens, and the pusher determining the speed. Halfway through the course, the rider and pusher had to switch places. The competition was very tight, but in the end, it was Canada with the bronze, Great Britain with the silver, and Germany came up with the gold.
The medal ceremony was held together with closing ceremonies on Thursday, February 17. Winners were announced, medals were awarded, and the country anthem from each gold medal winning country was played while the athletes held their place on the podiums. Each country completed a lap, and the preschool blew out the torch to conclude the Olympic games. A fun time was had by all, while learning lots of lessons about geography, competition, and connections with the real world.
The BC Winter Olympics continued at Lynch today, February 8, 2022, where the ice conditions were nearly perfect. “Shots on Goal” was the object of the game, where each competitor got three chances, including one practice shot. Three athletes from each country, USA (PK), Canada (K), Germany (1,2), and the United Kingdom (3,4) competed in this electric event. In round one, only one USA athlete found the net, but all three of the United Kingdom athletes found paydirt. Germany and Canada both struggled on the ice. Round two found the United Kingdom still in tip-top form, scoring all three points. Germany found their feet and were able to put in two. Canada and the USA struggled to get the puck to cooperate. The United Kingdom dominated this event, putting in all six of their goals, and taking home the gold. Germany won silver with two total goals. Taking home the bronze was Team USA with one goal.
The Olympic games will wrap up here next week with the bobsled race, in what could be a crowd favorite.
BC Winter Olympic Curling Held in Lynch Gym
Three competitors from each country sized up the sheet, or curling playing surface on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022, in the Lynch gymnasium. There were two rounds played, with 12 athletes in the bonspiel, or competition. In round one, Canada jumped out to an early lead with 7 points scored. The U.K. and Germany put in 4 points each, and the USA managed 2 points. In the second round of play, USA scored with two of their players for 4 points. All 3 Canadian athletes managed to take it to the house for 6 points. Germany chipped in 4, and the UK scored with all 3 athletes, scoring 7, with one rock landing in the button. The throwers and the sweepers all worked hard in this competition, and the crowd was completely engaged with the nonstop action. There’s no shortage of enthusiasm for the upcoming bobsledding and ice hockey events.

Opening ceremonies took place in the Lynch gymnasium on Monday, January 31, 2022 for the Inaugural BC Winter Olympics. Four countries were represented: the United Kingdom by grades 3 & 4, Germany by grades 1 & 2, Canada by Kindergarten, and the USA by preschool. The students all waved flags from their country and walked laps, while their country’s anthem played. The torch, having been passed through all the classrooms throughout the day, was then handed off to our very own Jacoby Widstrom who took a lap and lit the grand Olympic torch, which will burn throughout the games. Much excitement is happening at the Lynch campus over this big event. Students have been studying the Olympic rings, their countries, and learning about events.
Our first event was figure skating, which took place Tuesday, February 1, 2022. The event began with each country marching in with their flag, chanting their country’s name. The spectators paid close attention to the competition and cheered loudly for all competitors. The competition was very fierce. Three competitors from each country competed in a thirty second song selection. Scores from our three judges, Mrs. Kemnitz, Mrs. Eilers, and Mrs. Derickson, are being carefully tabulated and the gold, silver, and bronze medals are up for grabs.
Three events remain: curling, ice hockey, and bobsled racing. The students are learning a lot about the Olympics, the countries they are representing, competition, winning or losing, cheering on their schoolmates, and bravery to compete.
