Girls on the Run Season Starts Off Strong
April 19, 2022
Girls on the Run is in full swing in Boyd County. The county boasts two teams, with the option of meeting in Butte or Spencer, at the choice of each family. A total of 18 girls, 4 coaches and 2 high school assistant coaches have been running "laps" in and around the school. Girls on the Run is an innovative after-school program that combines exercise, education, and mentoring to promote healthy habits and self-esteem in 3rd through 6th grade girls. Teams meet for 75 minutes, twice a week to play interactive running games as they train to complete a 5K run/walk.
Lessons on health, communication, teamwork and self-respect are incorporated with the physical training, so girls get much more than exercise. The program teaches young girls the value of setting goals and working hard to achieve them in a noncompetitive, supportive environment. The year-end season highlight will be completing a 5K. The team looks forward to this on May 5th, where they will celebrate reaching their goal. Funding for each girl to participate in GOTR is underwritten by Spencer Community Foundation where they generously provide half of the registration fee. This support is greatly appreciated.
