The Boyd County Spartans hosted the 13-2 West Holt Huskies on January 21st for a conference bout. The Spartans played one of their best games of the season, losing by just 3 points to the #6 team in class D1. The Spartans played an outstanding first half, outscoring the Huskies by 13 in the 2nd quarter which put them up by 8 points at the break. With 26 seconds, the Spartans trailed by 1 but West Holt nailed 2 more free throws to extend the lead to 3. The aggressive Husky man-to-man defense limited the Spartan shooting percentage to 35% and their size held Boyd County to just 24 rebounds. Boyd County’s offense was led by Colby Hansen’s 22 points. Joseph Hiatt recorded 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Hansen also added 3 assists.

Saturday, January 27th, the Boyd County Spartans hit the road to play the Elkhorn Valley Falcons in Tilden. The Spartans played the athletic Falcon squad very close, but were nudged 38-44. The Spartans led by 5 at the half and held that lead until late in the game. Boyd County was just down by 3 points with 27 seconds left. A few clutch Elkhorn Valley free throws sealed the game. The Spartans were out-rebounded by 7 and the Falcons shot 12% better from the floor. Colby Hansen once again led Boyd County’s offense, scoring 26 points. Hansen also secured 10 rebounds and Joseph Hiatt added 6. Joseph Hiatt also pitched in 4 assists.
