Spartan Basketball Has Busy Week
The Spalding Academy Shamrocks basketball team, was overwhelmed 65-20 in a non-conference battle with the host Boyd County Spartans. The Boyd County Spartans defeated the Shamrocks on Tuesday, January 28th, by jumping out 20-4 in the first period. The Spartans were on the top of their game, leading 50-9 at halftime. The keys to the game for the Spartans were out-rebounding the Shamrocks by 20 and forcing 33 Spalding Academy turnovers. Boyd County’s Colby Hansen managed to contribute 20 points in addition to Kannin Ellwanger’s 14. Sophomore, Zac Rihanek brought down 7 rebounds for the Spartans. The defensive charge was led by Grant Kirwan’s 6 steals, along with Ellwanger and Ethan McBride’s 5 steals apiece.

On Thursday, January 30th, the visiting Burke Cougars basketball team scored a decisive 83-52 triumph over the Boyd County Spartans. The 8-2 Cougars drained some huge shots throughout the first half, leading by 23 at halftime. The Cougar’s speed and athleticism caused the Spartan offense a lot of disturbance. Boyd County was plagued by their own 30 turnovers, allowing minimal offensive production. While the Spartans struggled to slow Burke’s offense, they did manage to shoot 49% from the field. The feisty man-to-man defense left Colby Hansen in a position to post 19 points. Hansen also recorded 6 rebounds. Additionally, Joseph Hiatt chipped in 4 assists.
